An AA alternative that is growing in popularity is SMART Recovery. SMART takes a different approach to addiction and doesn’t follow the 12-step program. It’s a self-empowerment kind of support group with hundreds of meetings globally that takes a different approach. The connection between suicidal thoughts and substance abuse or addiction has long been recognized by the medical community. While depression and other external and internal factors contribute to suicide, substance abuse in many cases is directly related. Through dedicated counseling and both traditional and non-traditional treatment methods however, one can overcome their suicidal tendencies while triumphing over addiction.
